When Angeleça first approached me to work for Capria Publications on an innovative project, which would involve being part of a team producing a new concept in magazines, I had my reservations. I am first and foremost an artist not a graphic designer. However I like a challenge and am always open to improving my skills and widening my horizons.
On discussing the content of the magazine it became apparent that the visual images would lean more towards a fine art based formulation than graphic design. Committing to Cameo opened up many uncharted avenues for me; one being to produce a front cover for the magazine. This meant working to a tight brief. After careful consideration of the brief I took up the challenge to produce a textured, richly painted front cover.
Initially, the characteristic style of my work was the reason that Angeleça approached me to work for Capria Publications new magazine, but we were unsure whether my method and style of painting would be justified as a printed front cover. However, the concerns we had were tempered once I saw the quality of the reproduction from the scanning agency. The result is fabulous and has been received very well by everyone involved.

I have been a qualified artist for several years, although I have been painting and drawing for as long as I can remember, and I intend to continue to do so. Although Cameo is demanding, my passion is my art, consequently, the content and concepts in my paintings are permanently evolving.
The intention in my work is to create a dialogue between the viewer and the painting, whether visual or verbal. I work from a point inside that aims to represent an inner core of humanity, focusing on feelings and emotions. Parallel to this concept, I select certain words that I believe will represent the emotive sentiment I am intending to convey, for example anger, fear, entrapment, calm, peace.
The materials I use are not restricted allowing experimentation and enabling the picture to evolve. I feel it is important for an artist to develop a constant dialogue with the work they create, allowing the piece to develop, introducing an element of chance by letting materials dictate a result to create surface.
Although my art is based on my own feelings and chosen words, my intention is not to impose my views of my work onto others. My methods ultimately develop rich, textured surfaces the aim of which is to draw the viewer in and to invite then to place their own interpretation on my paintings. |
